Is Sustainable Journalism Possible?

ABSTRACT Humanity has experienced many economic, social and environmental crises throughout history, and the measures taken to overcome these crises have failed to solve the problems. These crises prevent the sustainability of societies in a healthy and safe manner and can threaten the future of the planet. As such, the news media has an important role to play in ensuring a sustainable society. However, the sustainability problems of journalism in the current ecosystem have reached serious dimensions. In this context, a new understanding of journalism (sustainable journalism) has been put forward to make both society and journalism sustainable. Therefore, this study tests the extent to which sustainable journalism is possible in today's media ecology and social order through a literature review. According to the findings, journalism, with its flaws, has not reached a sustainable dimension in today's conditions and and it seems difficult to do so in the near future. It has been determined that the deficiencies in journalistic practice, environmental-friendly news production, environmental journalism and creating revenue models have not been eliminated. However, it should be noted that the environmental, economic and journalistic initiatives in the field of sustainability are noteworthy.
