Current Situation and Potential of Fruit Growing in the Black Sea Region
The Black Sea Region is fourth in terms of total agriculture production areas and it follows theAegean Region as second in terms of fruit production areas in Turkey. The county has nearly 20 million tons oftotal fruit production. The Black Sea Region has 2.138.700 tons of total fruit production which corresponds to 10.7percent of total production in area with 6.811.396 da. Fruit production in the region is mainly performed in homegardens, fruit gardens and in commercial orchards. All of the Turkey’s tea production (100.0%) and the biggestportion of hazelnut production (66.4%) are supported in the Black Sea Region. Besides these products, otherfruits with higher production amount are cornelian cherry, kiwi, medlar, chestnut, walnut, mulberry, jujube, pear,persimmon and cherry. In the region, the highest decreases in production amount and production are in corneliancherry (-81.8%) and apricot (-46.6%), while the highest increases are in walnut (63.6%) and persimmon (29.98%)during 2010-2016. The largest fruit production areas are in provinces of Ordu (31.6%) and Giresun (16.6%), thehighest production quantities are in Rize (40.8%) and Trabzon (16.5%) provinces. Nut fruits have higher productionamount and areas after tea production in the Black Sea Region. In this study, current situation and potential of fruitgrowing in the Black Sea Region were evaluated in detailed. According the data evaluated in the study, the BlackSea Region has an important potential in Turkey’s fruit growing.
