İslam düşünce geleneğinde re’y, düşünme metotlarının en kapsamlı adıdır. Bu nedenle, re’y kavramının anlam derecelerini ortaya koymak çok önemli bir noktadır. Re’y, nass bulunsun ya da bulunmasın, bir konuda ictihad ve istidlal ile hükmetmektir. Re’y, daha ilk dönemlerde bir çok hukuki, dinî ve ahlaki fikir ortaya koymuştur.
