Deprem ve bunun oluşturduğu etki, insanların günlük deneyimlerinin çok ötesindedir. Zira depremin önceden kestirilemez olması, o anda yaşanan çaresizlik duygusu ve deprem sonrasında karşılaşılan sorunlar, kayıplar, kişilerin üzerindeki etkisini daha da artırmaktadır. Ülkemizi sarsan ve üzen 17 Ağustos ve 12 Kasım 1999 tarihli depremin şiddeti, etkilediği bölgenin büyüklüğü, yarattığı yıkım ve kayıplar, uzun süre devam eden artçı depremler, kurtarma çalışmalarındaki zorluklar, depremzedelerin barınma gibi sorunları bu felaketin etkisini önceden karşılaşılan benzer felaketlerin etkisinin çok üstüne çıkarmıştır

The earthquake and its impact are far beyond the daily experiences of people. Because the unpredictability of the earthquake, the feeling of helplessness in the moment and the problems encountered after the earthquake, the losses on the people further increase. The severity of the earthquake, 17 August and 12 November 1999, the size of the region affected by the earthquake, the devastation and losses it caused, the long-standing aftershocks, the difficulties in the rescue and the problems of the earthquake victims increased the impact of this disaster far beyond the effects of similar disasters.
