Blood-germ cell barriers in the developing testes of Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera)

Distributions of blood-germ cell barriers in the testes of last larval, prepupa, young and old pupa and adult stages of Galleria mellonella were investigated using horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and ruthenium red (RR) by light and electron microscopy. Membrane differentiations forming barriers are septate junctions. They are formed between the envelope cells of the adjacent cysts or same cyst in the larval testis. Length of them are long and number of them too many. In this stage, a few number membrane differentiations is also observed between the envelope cell-germ cell. The barriers are formed between envelope cells of same cyst in the prepupa and young pupa stages. Their lengths are short and a few in number. While they are a few numbers between envelope cells of same cyst, they are seen too numerous and as long bands between both envelope cell-germ cell and germ-germ cells in the old pupa. Barrier structures in the adult's testis are never almost present. In the all life stages which are examined, no barrier is seen in the testis wall.
