A case of systemic lupus erythematosus associated with vulvar invasive squamous cell carcinoma
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease whose long-term sequelae may include many types of comorbidity, including neoplasia. The association between SLE and malignancy has as yet not been established and it is still debatable whether SLE patients have an increased incidence of cancer overall compared to the general population. However, several studies have demonstrated a possible relationship between SLE and several neoplasia. We report a case of invasive vulvar squamous cell carcinoma occurring in a 52-year-old SLE patient. Only four cases of vaginal/vulvar cancer associated with SLE have previously been mentioned in the literature. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second detailed case report in the literature of vulvar invasive squamous cell carcinoma in a SLE patient.
