Contemporary Spanish Literature for Children and Youth is Questioning Today

Nowadays, Spanish Literature for Children and Youth appeals to a population known to have various characteristics and expectations, and it is recognized as a different branch of literature. Educational concern known as the primary function of this branch of literature started to turn into new approaches in the 60s. One of the two fundamental trends in terms of Literature for Children and Youth in Spain in 2000s is surrealism and the other one is the concept of reality. In surrealist literary works, there are ‘fantastic’ fictions which base on unlimited imagination and futuristic worlds that are created through science-fiction influenced by technological developments. In realist literary works, idealized happy worlds are replaced by challenging real worlds. Topics such as difficulties of life, wars, diseases, desperation and etc. comes into prominence and the real world is sought to be narrated together with all conflicts, difficulties and meaninglessness thereof. In this study titled “Contemporary Spanish Literature for Children is Questioning Today”, we tried to draw attention to the transparency of the reflection of reality regarding the world and life through three literary works that are selected from contemporary literature. We see many different concepts that reflect reality in the contemporary literature. In this study, outstanding three literary works are reviewed as in the followings: the first literary work is “Postman of Bagdad” (El Cartero de Bagdad)1 on war; the second is “The Others (Secret Society)” (“Los O.T.R.O.S. (Sociedad Secreta)”)2 as a solution proposal to the conflicts of opinions that arise from differences; the third is “Formidable Fear Factory” (Formidable Fábrica del Miedo”)3 on people who sacrifice themselves to the culture of consumption in today’s society.
