Combustion properties of various wood species
In this study, flamed source combustion properties of Oriental beech (Fagus Orientalis Lipsky), scots pine (Pinus silvestris L.) Uludağ fir (Abies bornmülleriana Mattf.), oak (Quercus petraea spp.), white mulberry (Morus alba L.) and lime-tree (Tilia perfifolia Ehrh.) was determined according to the procedure of ASTM-E 69. As a result, lime-tree was the highest in mass loss during combustion under flame source by the release of the highest carbondioxyde while other tested two wood species-oak and beach- yielded the highest oxygen and carbonmonoxide ratios probably because of their slow burning characteristics due a likely to their higher densities compared to lime-tree. Selfburning characteristics of the tested species after removing the flame source, however, indicated that the highest mass loss occurred with the oak wood yielding the highest heat release: Therefore, it is likely to interpret that the densier the wood the severer the combustion. In addition, Uludağ fir resulted in highest carbondioxyde ratios possibly because its resin content. Additional tests are required for more accurate comparison of the tested properties. It is advised that if the oak wood is subjected to fire, it is not used
