Clinical Aspects of Pediatric Penetrating Corneal Eye Injuries with Pencil
Objective: To evaluate the clinical features of penetrating eye injury with pencil in the pediatric age group by comparing it with corneal injuries due to other causes. Material and Method: Records of patients under 18 years of age who were followed for at least 6 months due to penetrating corneal injury between 2013 and 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Results: Forty one eyes of 41 patients were included in the study. There were 15 (36.6%) patients in the first group with pencil injury and 26 (63.4%) patients in the second group with non-pencil injuries. Fourteen (34.1%) of the patients were female and 27 (65.9%) were male. The mean age was 8.80 ± 3.32 (3-17) years in the first group and 8.38 ± 4.12 (3-14) years in the second group. Additional pathologies; 11 (73.3%) iris prolapse, 3 (20.0%) pencil tip in the eye, and 5 (33.3%) traumatic cataract were observed in the first group. In the second group, 14 (43.8%) had iris prolapse, 7 (26.9%) had traumatic cataract and 5 (15.6%) had hyphema. Primary repair was performed in all patients. In the first and second groups, respectively; in the postoperative follow-up, 4 (26.6%) and 18 (56.3%) patients had corneal haze, 6 (40.0%) and 10 (38.4%) patients had pupil irregularities. Preoperative best corrected visual acuities (BCVA) were evaluated as mean 0.37 ± 0.20 and 0.13 ± 0.18, respectively, and at postoperative follow-up 0.84 ± 0,12 and 0.48 ± 0.42. There was a statistically significant difference (p
