Mutagenic Potentials of Self-Adhesive Luting Cements as Detected by the Salmonella/Microsome Test
Resin cements have been considered the material of choice to cement indirect restorations, may be contact with tooth and oral tissues for prolonged periods of time. Thus, assessments of these materials’ biocompatibility is gaining increasing importance for both patients and dentists. The aim of study was to evaluate the potential mutagenicity of two self-adhesive luting cement “Biscem” Bisco, USA and “Maxcem” Kerr, Switzerland by employing the Ames Salmonella/mikrosome test. The materials were eluted in dimethyl sulphoxide and the aliquots were used and incubation period of one day at 370 C. Mutagenic effects of the materials were tested on Salmonella typhimurium strains TA 98 and TA 100 using the standard plate incorporation assay in the absence of S9 fraction from rat liver. No mutagenic effects were detected for the two self adhesive luting cements tested P >0,05 . We can conclude that Biscem and Maxcem has no mutagenic effect, but there is need for further investigations on different test strains, test aliquots and incubation periods and also in the presence of S9 fraction
