Radiographic Detection of Buccal and Occlusal Caries: Effects of X-Ray Beam Factors and Different Dental Radiography Techniques

The purpose of this study is to investigate theeffects of using different radiographic techniqueswith dental X-ray machines operating at differentkilovoltage peak levels; on the image quality ofocclusal and buccal caries radiographs. A total of 45 extracted teeth, 15 of which arewithout caries,15 of which are occlusal caries; and15 are with buccal caries, have been collected. These teeth were placed in groups of 3 in waxmolds, in a mixed manner and 15 wax molds wereobtained. These molds were exposed for 0,2, 0,3 and0,4 seconds at 50, 60, 70 kVp. Afterwards, the filmswere processed using an automatic film processorin standard conditions. And the resulting radiographs were evaluated by two observers. Evaluation of buccal caries did not result inany significant statistical difference; whereas exposures for 0,4 seconds at 60 kVp produced slightlybetter results. As a result of the evaluation of occlusal caries,it has been concluded that radiographs obtained at0,3 seconds and 60 kVp produced statistically significant differences
