Development of Cluster Theory-A Conceptual Framework

Although the industry clusters drew researchersattention af ter 1990s with Michael E. Porter, actually it was based on much older varioustheories. The aim of this study is examiningdevelopment of cluster theory by discussing oldertheories which contribute to the current clustertheory. First developed theories like TraditionalPlace and Agglomeration and Industrial Districtmostly stressed geographic concentration whichis essential f or clustering. Then, Italian IndustryDistrict and Creative Milieu, New IndustrialSpaces, and New Economic Geography Theoriesemphasized social relationship between membersunlike their predecessors. As a result, it can besaid that cluster theory which is associated withPorter in nowadays is largely based on theprevious theories. However, it is important tonote Porter's valuable contributions to clustertheory. The Learning Regions and RegionalInnovation Systems theories both involves othertheories and highlights innovation
