The Relationship between University Students' Perceived Control Level and Social Self-Efficacy Perceptions with Psychological Symptoms

The aim of this study is to determine the explanatory relationship between problem symptoms, perceived control, and social self-efficacy, as well as to reveal the level of this relationship. In line with this general purpose, data were collected from a total of 654 foundation and state university students, 347 of whom were female and 307 were male. The Perceived Control Scale (PCS), Social Self-Efficacy Scale (SSES), and Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) were used to collect data. Additionally, for the longitudinal study, the new data were compared with the PCS and SSES preliminary data of 300 university students collected in 1999 and 2002. Data analyzes were provided with SPSS/Windows 22.0 and AMOS package program. In data analysis, t-test was used for longitudinal comparisons of measurements taken from two different sources. Scale validity and reliability analyzes were performed using SPSS EFA and AMOS CFA analyzes. The results revealed that a positive moderate correlation was determined between the perception of control and social self-efficacy. Furthermore, a significant negative correlation was observed between psychological symptoms subtests and perception of control and social self-efficacy. Moreover, the results show that the effect of control perception on psychological symptoms is direct, while it is indirect through social self-efficacy. Finally, the findings showed that the perceived control of university students significantly changed during the longitudinal period, but the change in their social self-efficacy levels was not statistically significant.
