Alternations: The Vipers in Our Bosom

Since the beginning of Generative Phonology alternations have played an important role as they were assumed to yield insights into the phonological rules characterizing a language as well as the underlying representations they operate on. This paper argues that taking them as the prime explicandum of phonological theory leads to unrestricted models that miss the point what phonology should be all about: Explaining what a well-formed word can look like in a given language.
