The importance of vitamin D in preventive medicine: Chronical disease prevention

Vitamin D is one of the earliest hormones that exists in the universe since 750 million years. It is necessary from birth to death for growth, development and skeletal health. Vitamin D deficiency causes rickets in childhood, osteoporosis and osteomalacia in adults. There are a number of epidemiologic studies evaluating the preventive role of sunlight exposure anD vitamin D in some chronical diseases. Prostate, breast and colon cancers, type I diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, multipl sclerosis, hypertension are some of these conditions. The easiest way of prevention from vitamin D deficiency is mild sunlight exposure. Vitamin D supplementation is necessary when the requirement is not met by sunlight exposure. Serum 25(OH)D levels are important in monitoring vitamin D status.
