Venedik’te Bir Denizci:Rodoslu Michael ve Eseri

Öz Rodoslu Michael 15. yüzyılda yaşamış bir denizciydi. Michael, Venedik’in Akdeniz’de üstünlüğü ele aldığı ve bu denizde doğudan batıya gemi dolaştırdığı bir dönemde Venedik donanmasında çeşitli görevlerde hizmet etti. Uzun süren deniz görevi ve edindiği tecrübeler Michael’ın muazzam bir bilgi birikimine sahip olmasının yolunu açtı. Bu birikimini yazıya döktü. Böylelikle ortaya dönemin denizciliği hakkında oldukça tafsilatlı ve değerli bir eser çıktı. Michael’ın eseri seyir, astronomi, matematik ve gemi inşası gibi çok çeşitli alanlarda bilgiler ihtiva etmektedir. İçerikte yüzeysel anlatımdan ziyade fiili tatbiki mümkün mühendislik ilmine uygun bilgiler mevcuttur. Eserin önemi bu döneme kadar yazılan ve ilham alınan başlıca risalelerden biri olmasıdır.
