SELENYUMUN İNSAN SAĞLIĞI ÜZERİNE ETKİLERİ VE DİYABETES MELLİTUSLA İLİŞKİSİ Effects of Selenium on Human Health and its Relationship With Diabetes Mellitus

ÖZETSelenyum tiroid hormonu metabolizması, antioksidan savunma ve immün sistemin düzenlenmesibaşta olmak üzere vücutta birçok mekanizmada rol alan ve birçok enzime kofaktör olarakkatılan esansiyel bir elementtir. Selenyum eksikliğinin yaşlanma, kanser, insülin direnci, diyabet,kardiyovasküler ve nörodejeneratif hastalıklar, artmış mortalite riski, immün sistem hastalıklarıylaile ilişkili olabileceği belirtilmektedir. Serum selenyum seviyesini istenilen düzeyde tutmak içinselenyumdan zengin olan besinler yeterli miktarda diyette yer almalıdır. Selenyumun diyabetesmellitus ile ilişkisinde literatürde çelişkili veriler bulunmakta bu nedenle, mekanizması tam olarakaçıklanamamaktadır. Sonuç olarak selenyunum diyabetle ile ilişkisinin hangi düzeyde olduğununbelirlenmesi için daha fazla çalışma yapılması gerekmektedir.Anahtar Kelimeler: Selenyum; İnsan Sağlığı; Optimal alım; Diyabetes mellitusABSTRACTSelenium is an essential element involved in many mechanisms in the body, especially in thyroidhormone metabolism, antioxidant defense and regulation of the immune system, and involvedas a cofactor in many enzymes. It is reported that selenium deficiency might be associated withaging, cancer, insulin resistance, diabetes, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, increasedmortality risk and immune system diseases. To keep serum selenium level at desired levelsit should be included in the diet. In the literature, there are contradictory data about the relationshipof selenium with diabetes mellitus, therefore the mechanism cannot be fully explained.As a conclusion, more studies need to be for determining the level of association with seleniumand diabetes.Keywords: Selenium; Human health; Optimal intake; Diabetes mellitus
