Peaceful and Bloody Secessions in the 20th Century

Despite the creation of many new nation-states during the 20th century, rarely has this process taken place through secession and usually through armed conflicts. With the exception of the seperation of Iceland from Denmark, Norway from Sweden, Singapore from Malaysia and Slovakia from Czechoslovakia, throughout history, war has been the preferred method of separation and most political secessions led to scenes of bloody actions and war. Recently, the greatest loss of life has taken place mostly due to ethnic/national conflicts within a certain nation, rather than wars between the nations themselves. This article will discuss secessions that have ocurred both through peaceful and violent means during the 20th century.
