Maternal tolerans

Maternal tolerance

Pregnancy is a physiologic condition characterized by a local tolerance of the maternal immune system to the paternal antigens expressed by the embryonic cells. Mammals carry their embryos within their uterus although half of their genetic material comes from the father. There are some certain immunologic mechanisms to allowing the survival and growth of the embryo in the uterus. In this review, how the maternal immune system can tolerate the semi-allogenic embryo, known as maternal tolerance, is discussed briefly.
