[THE MASTOI FROM MYLASA AS GRAVE GIFTS]

As a result of the salvage excavations had been conducted at ancient Mylasa in Karia, the Late Classical and Hellenistic Period graves yielded a considerable amount of mastoi. The current data about the shape indicate that the mastos was not a popular shape in Attic pottery at all. The shape was almost totally missing in Western Anatolia throughout the Archaic and Classical Periods. This study aims to explore the symbolic significanceof this shape which was regularly donated to the graves of Mylasa and its relationships with the local cult of the region.
