Antimicrobial resistance and prevention policies

The increase of antibiotic resistance causes severe morbidity and mortality. The factors that play roles for the development and emergence of antibiotic resistance includes usage of antibiotics, infection control insufficiency and environment. Optimization of treatment duration is very important for prevention of resistance. Procalcitonin studies which was conducted in recent years carries hope for future in the optimization of treatment duration. Antibiotic resistance, patient safety and cost problems indicate the need of antibiotic stewardship programmes. Antibiotic stewardship programme should include multidiciplinary structure, programmatic and prospective interventions.
