CONGENITAL CARDIAC SURGERY AND GASTROINTESTINAL SYSTEM EFFECTS

Gastrointestinal complications are among the most important factors increasing morbidity, mortality and hospitalization timesfollowing cardiac surgery. Splanchnic hypoperfusion secondary to low cardiac output is the main mechanism responsible for thesecomplications. A wide spectrum of gastrointestinal problems including feeding difficulties, paralytic ileus, necrotizing enterocolitisand intestinal perforation can be seen. The aim of this review is to discuss the pathophysiology, risk factors and the type ofgastrointestinal complications that can be seen in the perioperative period of congenital cardiac surgery
