THE EFFECT OF PREOPERATIVE VIDEO BRIEFING TO PERIOPERATIVE ANXIETY IN PATIENTS UNDER GENERAL ANESTHESIA

Objective: Most of the patients have serious anxiety before operation. There are limited studies which show the effect of preoperativevideo briefing for perioperative anxiety. The aim of this study is to show the effect of preoperative video briefing for perioperative anxietyby using State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores. Method: 100 patients, between ages 18-70, ASA I-II who were going to go through elective operations under general anesthesia, were randomized and separated into two groups as control group (n=50) and video group (n=50). Before the pre-anesthetic evaluation, STAIand VAS evaluations were done for both groups and basal values were recorded. Video group watched the film but control group did notwatch the film. After that pre-anesthetic evaluation is done for both of the groups. One hour before the operations, STAI and VAS scores ofpatients were evaluated again. The film which was shown to video group was coproduced by Ataturk University Communication Facultyand Medicine Faculty Anesthesiology and Reanimation Department. Results: There was no difference between demographic values of the groups. There was no statistical difference on basal STAI andVAS scores of video and control groups (p>0.05). There was a statistically significant difference between the control group (47.20±9.06)and video group (39.34±9.72) in the STAI evaluations which is done one hour before the operations (p<0.001). There was a statisticallysignificant difference between the control group (4.60±2.96) and video group (3.20±2.14) in the VAS evaluations which is done one hourbefore the operations (p=0.01). Conclusion: Preoperative video briefing decreases the anxiety in the patients under general anesthesia and can be a routine inpreanesthetic evaluation.
