The determination of ruminal degradability of wheat and barley straws chemically treated

This study was carried out to investigate the degradability of dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) of wheat and barley straws treated with ammonia and urea by using nylon bag technique. Three rumen cannulated Awassi rams, 2 years old, were used in present research. Feeds (control; straw samples of treated with urea and ammonia for 10, 20 and 30 days ) were incubated for 16, 24, 48 and 72 hours in rumen. The differences among the DM and CP degradabilitie values were highly significant (P<0.01) according to straw variety, treatment, incubation periods, treatment x straw variety, straw variety x incubation periods and treatment x incubation periods interactions. Treatment with ammonia and urea increased crude protein content of straws. Barley straw had significantly higher degradabilities of DM and CP than that of wheat straw. Straws treated with ammonia for 30 days resulted in significantly an increase in degradabilities of DM and CP. This was followed by straws treated with ammonia20 and ammonia10 respectively. Urea was only effective on degradability of CP. Considering degradability of DM and CP, it would be beneficial for animal nutrition to treat wheat and barley straw grown in Northeastern Anatolia with ammonia.
