Hypericum Species as Important Medicinal Plants and Their Usage

There are 482 Hypericum species which grow naturally in different geographic origins of the world from equator zone to Scandinavian Countries. Those species have been used as folk remedy in world-wide in treatments of neuralgia, menstural disorders, sciatica, arthritis and stomach diseases for centuries. Of all Hypericum species, the most popular and common one is Hypericum perforatum L. It has been studied extensively in clinical trials for the last three decades and used popularly in treatment of depression. Turkey is an important centre for Hypericum species which are known as “kantaron, binbirdelik otu, kan otu, kılıç otu, yaraotu, kuzukıran”. There are 89 Hypericum species in our flora of which 43 are endemic. On the contrary of world literature, hovewer, there are only few scientific studies on those species, conducted in Turkey. Besides, those species have been collected extensively from natural flora for commercial purposes. In this review, it was aimed to remark Hypericum species which are an inactive source currently for Turkey and to present detailed information to the relevants
