The Impact of Peer-Assisted Writing on 4th Graders’ Writing Achievement and Performance: A Pilot Study

This study aimed to examine whether peer-assisted writing activities had an effect on the writing achievement and performance of 4th grade students. The single subject design was used to conduct the study. The sample of the study consisted of six primary school students in a class of 4th graders who were selected using the clustered random sampling method. A series of descriptive analyses was used to compare the findings of peer-assisted writing group and the rest of the class. The Wilcoxon test was used to compare the results of the peer-assisted writing group’s pre-and posttest scores. The results of the analysis revealed that the peer-assisted writing group was more advantageous than the rest of the class in terms of writing scores, total number of words and the percentage of number of correct words. In addition, it became obvious that there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test results of the students in the peer-assisted writing group in favor of the post-test in terms of their writing scores and, the total number of correct words. It can be concluded that peer-assisted writing had a positive contribution in increasing 4th graders’ writing scores and performances.
