Risk Factors for Child Neglect and Abuse: Mothers Growing Up in Institutional Care
Objective: Parental characteristics are very important for issues related to child abuse and neglect. We aimed to investigate the adverse effects regarding child abuse and neglect that may occur due to growing up of mothers in institutional care. Material and Methods: A total of 290 children who had been exposed to neglect / abuse and followed up by the Ankara Child Protection Unit between January 2015 and October 2017 were included. The characteristics of 7 of the 290 cases whose mothers grew up in institutional care were presented. Results: Four of our cases of were neglected, two were physical abuse cases, and one was both neglected and physically abused. Four of the cases were under 1 year old. It was detected that most of the mothers had psychiatric problems and could not have a healthy marriage relationship and most of the fathers were in prison. Conclusion: There is an increased risk of the neglect / abuse in children whose mothers grew up in institutional care. Comparative-controlled studies are needed regarding this issue. The routine follow-up of children whose mothers grew up in institutional care should be a reasonable intervention.
