Okul sporlarının orta öğretim öğrencilerinin akademik basarı ve davranıs gelisimine etkisi

Öğrencilerin okullarda ders dısı etkinliklerden biri olan okul sporlarına harcadıkları zamanın, gereksiz olduğu ve öğrencilerin akademik ve davranıs gelisimine olumsuz etkilere neden olduğu seklindeki görüsler uzun zamandan beri tartısılmaktadır. Bu bakıs açısı özellikle ebeveynlerin çocuklarını fiziksel aktivitelere yönlendirme motivasyonlarını azaltmakta ve öğrencilerin yasam boyu spor alıskanlığı edinmelerine engel teskil etmektedir. Toplumda her yas grubundaki bireylerde obezite ve kalp damar hastalıklarının artmaya baslaması bu varsayımı kanıtlayan en önemli delillerden biridir. Oysa spor yapmanın insan hayatına yapmıs olduğu katkılar evrensel düzeyde kabul görmüs olmasına rağmen, fiziksel aktivite ve spor yapmaya gereken önem ve değerin verilmiyor olması sasırtıcıdır. Bu çalısmanın amacı orta öğretim öğrencilerinin akademik basarıları ve davranıs gelisimleri ile okul sporları arasındaki iliskiyi incelemektir. Bu amaçla 15 ilköğretim okulundan rasgele seçilen 651 sekizinci sınıf öğrenci üzerinde yapılan bu çalısmada okul sporlarına katılan ve katılmayan öğrencilerin sosyallesme, dısa dönüklük, sorumluluk, duygusal denge, kültürel değisim, devamsızlık, genel davranıs gelisimleri, ve akademik basarıları arasında olası farklılıklar arastırılmıstır. Gerekli veriler okul idaresi tarafından sağlanan öğrenci ruhsal dosyaları ve sporcu lisansları yardımıyla toplanmıstır. Veriler SPSS11.5 (Sosyal Bilimler Đstatistik Programı) yardımıyla çözümlenmistir. Öncelikle betimleyici istatistikle verilerin ortalama ve standart sapmaları hesaplanmıs, arkasından okul sporlarına katılan ve katılmayan öğrenciler arasında akademik ve davranıs gelisimi değiskenlerine göre anlamlı bir farklılık olup olmadığı arastırılmıstır. Interscholastic sport participation academic success and behavioral development of elementary school students

It have been criticized that the extensive time student spend on extracurricular activities and interscholastic sport participation are wasting of time and have negative effect on academic success and behavioral development of the student. These perspective degrees the family support on physical education and have various obstacle to acquire active life style in child future life. The increase of obesity and cardiovascular diseases in our society is one of the main evidence of this sedentary life style. On the contrary the sports have universal acceptance to have positive effects on human life, not enough importance attached to physical activity, sports and exercises. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between interscholastic sports participation as an extracurricular activity and academic achievement and behavioral development of students at middle school students in Turkey. In this study 651 eight grade students were participated from fifteen elementary schools, which are randomly selected. Required data were collected by student’s personal data record folders, and athletics participation certificates, which are provided by the schools administrations in Nevsehir Province. Data was analyzed by using SPPS 11.5 statistical package program. In data analysis, first, appropriate descriptive statistics were conducted; means and standards deviations were presented. Then t-test was used to assess in order to be able detect possible differences between interscholastic sport participant and non-participant in terms of sociability, extrovertism, responsibility taking, emotional balance, cultural development, absenteeism, overall behavioral development and academic success. Results indicate that interscholastic sport participators have significantly higher scores in sociability, extrovertism, responsibility, overall behavioral development, academic success (GPA) and lower score in absenteeism. According to the results of this study it is necessary for administrators, teachers, coaches, and school board members to identify how athletics influence student behavioral and academic success, to develop better and miscellaneous programs promoting student achievement. Moreover parents should be informed about the benefits of physical activities, extracurricular sports, and interscholastic sports participation in student’s physical, behavioral, emotional and academic development.
