Periodontal Diseases and Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes

Although periodontal diseases are described as localized infections occuring in dental and supporting structures, destructive changes are not only limited to the periodontium. Inflammatory periodontal diseases may have a wide range of systemic effects. In recent years, research in periodontology has focused on periodontal medicine and an association has been described between some systemic diseases and periodontal diseases. These can be summarized as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, pulmonary diseases, metabolic syndrome, kidney diseases and adverse outcomes of pregnancy (preterm birth, low birth weight, pre-eclampsia). The purpose of this review was to evaluate the association between adverse pregnancy outcomes and periodontal disease in the light of scientific findings.
