The Ciliate (Protista, Ciliophora) Fauna of the Bostaniçi Pond (Tuşba, Van)

The present study was carried out on ciliated protozoans obtained from 4 stations in Bostaniçi Pond, Van, during the years of 2001−2003. Morphological and morphometrical characteristics of obtained ciliates were determined by using various morphological and cytological techniques. During the study period, 42 ciliate species belonging to 17 orders, 31 families and 34 genera belonging to classes of Heterotrichea, Spirotrichea, Litostomatea, Phyllopharyngea, Nassophorea, Colpodea, Prostomatea and Oligohymenophorea were identified. From these species, Climacostomum virens, Stentor roeseli, Euplotes moebiusi, Codonella cratera, Pelagostrombidium mirabile, Phialina minima, Ovalorhabdos sapropelicus, Monilicaryon monilatum, Pseudochilodonopsis algivora, P. fluviatilis, Trithigmostoma srameki, T. steini, Zosterodasys transversa, Bursaria truncatella, Holophrya teres, Urotricha platystoma, Lembadion bullinum, Homalogastra setosa, Calyptotricha lanuginosa, Tetrahymena setosa and Ophryoglena atra are new record for the ciliate fauna of Turkey. Ciliate density and species diversity of pond were found relatively poor because of low primer production related to absence of macrofit components and turbidity of water. It was concluded that, Holophrya sp., Ophryoglena sp. and Paranophrys sp., which we could not placed within any known species, should be reconsidered by morphological and morphometric methods supported by molecular techniques.
