Subcutaneous fat necrosis with hypocalcaemia in a newborn

Subcutaneous fat necrosis is an inflammatory disorder of the adipose tissue, which appears during the first weeks of life. The skin lesions are usually located on the face, trunk, proximal extremities and back which present as subcutaneous nodules and plaques. The pathogenesis of subcutaneous fat necrosis is still unknown. The cutaneous involvement is often associated with hypercalcemia, but hypocalcemia is rarely reported with subcutaneous fat necrosis. Hypocalcemia might be secondary to perinatal hypoxia and polycytemia in neonatal period, therefore we think that hypocalcemia with subcutaneous fat necrosis is coincidental in this case.
