Bu çalışmanın amacı; ilköğretim üçüncü sınıf öğrencilerinin toplamsal ilişkiler içeren (toplama-çıkarma) problemlerde tersine çevirme prensibini uygularken geçirdikleri zihinsel işlem süreçlerini, bu öğrencilerin bu tür problemleri çözerken hangi stratejileri kullandıkları ve nasıl kullandıklarını incelemektir. Bu araştırmanın deseni nitel olarak yapılandırılmıştır. Çalışmanın katılımcılarını İzmir ili merkez ilçesinde bulunan bir ilköğretim okulunda bulunan biri kız biri erkek iki 3. sınıf öğrencisi oluşturmaktadır. Yapılan klinik görüşmelerin içerik analizi sonuçlarına göre öğrencilerin tersine çevirme stratejisini toplamsal ifadeler içeren yarı soyut problemlerde, sözel ifade gerektiren problemlere göre daha fazla kullandığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.

The study aims to examine third grade students’ mental processes during their application of inversion principle on solving the problems including additive relationships, which strategies that these students used for solving the problems and how they use them. The study’s design is organized as qualitative research method. The participants of the study consist of two 3th grade students attending to an elementary school in Izmir-as one female and another one is male. According to the performed clinical interviews’ content analysis results, it is concluded that the students used inversion principle for solving the semi-abstract problems including additive relationships more than the verbal problems.
