Serum Neopterin and Procalcitonin Levels in Dogs Naturally Infested with Sarcoptes canis

This study aimed to determine serum neopterin and procalcitonin levels in dogs naturally infested with Sarcoptes canis. The animal material of the study consisted of 15 dogs with S. canis and 10 healthy dogs of different ages and genders. Blood was taken once from both S. canis infested dogs and healthy dogs, and their serums were separated by centrifugation at 3000 rpm for 10 minutes. The obtained sera were stored at −20 ºC until the analyses. As a result of the analyses, neopterin (5,48 nmol/L ± 0,37 nmol/L) and procalcitonin (59,71 ng/L ± 2,45 ng/L) levels of the sick dogs were found to be significantly higher (P < ,05) than the neopterin (4,27 nmol/L ± 0,30 nmol/L) and procalcitonin (47,63 ng/L ± 3,16 ng/L) levels of the healthy dogs. As a result, dogs with S. canis develop a severe skin inflammation. It has been determined that neopterin and procalcitonin biomarkers increased as the cells that emerged as a result of this fire formed in the skin, as the speech of the immune response and acute phase response.
