The effects of shank length on some production traits of a commercial layer flock
This study was made to investigate the relationship of shank length with some production traits of a commercial layer flock (ISA Brown).Pullets were divided into 3 experimental groups according to their shank length as short, middle and long in the 16 weeks of age. The average production ages for the groups were found 126, 127 and 128 days for 5 % egg produc-tions, 151, 150 and 145 days for 50 % egg productions, respectively. It was found that the hen - housed egg produc-tion of the groups were 64.90, 78.65 and 78.49, the hen-day egg production of per hen were 293.9, 305.6 and 312.2, total egg mass of per hen were 18.66, 18.79 and 19.13 kg, total hen-housed feed consumption per hen were 33.49, 36.88 and 36.06, hen-day feed consumption per hen per day were 106.6, 101.3 and 101.6 g, the egg number for per kg feed consumption were 7.30, 8.03 and 8.20, mortality rate 35.71, 12.08 and 17.58 %, respectively. It was concluded that shank length affected the layer performance and would be very useful method for estimating pullet quality in this commercial layer flock.
