The effect of Saccharomycess cerevisiae on rumen protozoa, Na+, K+ and total volatile fatty acid of rumen fluid in dairy cattle
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of Saccharomyces cerevisiae on protozoa counts and percentage, pH, $Na^+$, $K^+$ and Total Volatile Fatty Acid (TWA) of ruminai fluid in dairy cattle. In this experiment, twentyfour Brown Turkish and Holstein dairy cows with the same age and milk yield were used. The cows were fed on concentrate and peas silage during experimental period. The ration of the experimental group animals was added 10 g live yeàst culture (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) per head. The study lasted for ten weeks, two of which were for adaptation. At the 1'st, 30' th and 60'th.day of the experiment 3 hours after morning feeding ruminai fluid content were taken from the control and experimental group animals and samples were tested for pH, protozoa counts and identifica-tion, total volatile fatty acids (TVFA),$Na^+$ and $K^+$ values.Protozoa counts in 30'th day were found higher (p<0.05) in Sc group (122082.3 ± 8177.8 $ml^{-1}$, n=12) than K group (-50694.8 ± 2120.5 $ml^{-1}$, n=12), $K^+$ value in 60'th day were lower (p<0. 05) in Sc group (23.88 ± 2.58 mEq/1, n=12) than K group (26.42 ± 2.39 mEq/1, n=12). There was not any important difference between K and Sc groups in accordance with the other tested parameters. In this study different protozoa classes belonging Holotricha (Isotricha prostoma, Isotricha intestinalis, Dasytricha ruminantium) and Oligotricha (Entodinium spp, Epidinium spp, Diplodinium spp, Polyplastron multivesiculatum, Ophyroscolex caudatum) were identified in both K and Sc groups. It was concluded that addition of Saccharomyces cerevisiae live yeast culture to dairy cow ration has no significant effect on tested ruminai parameters.
