The effects of humic and fulvic acids on the entomopathogenic nematodes, Steinernema carpocapsae (Weiser), Steinernema feltiae (Filipjev) (Rhabditida: Steinernematidae) and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (Poinar) (Rhabditida: Heterorhabditidae)

Humic substances (humic and fulvic acids) are known to improve soil structureand plant yield. It has also been reported that humic acids have a nematicidal effect againstplant parasitic nematodes (PPNs). The aim of this study was to determine the effect of thehumic substances on entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs). Three different species of EPN,Steinernema carpocapsae (Weiser), (Rhabditida: Steinernematidae) TURS4, Steinernemafeltiae (Filipjev), (Rhabditida: Steinernematidae) TUR3 and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora(Poinar) (Rhabditida: Heterorhabditidae) HBH, and an organic fertilizer that contained 15%humic and fulvic acid, were used in this experiment. The EPNs were exposed to two differentdoses (2 ml/l and 5 ml/l) of the fertilizer. The EPNs were not negatively affected by humicand fulvic acids. In addition, it was determined that the effect of the two different doses onthe three species was not significantly different. Moreover, both doses of the fertilizersdecreased the mortalities of H. bacteriophora HBH and S. feltiae TUR3.
