The Psychometric Characteristics of the Turkish form of the Aberrant Behavior Checklist

The purpose of this study is to investigate the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC) developed for assessing effects of the intervention methods on behaviors of the people with mental retardation. 258 people with mental retardation from the residential institution and 177 from special education schools with the age range 10-24, were rated on ABC by their caregivers / teachers. Using the same statistical procedures as employed in original study, preliminary reliability and validity studies were conducted for the Turkish version of the ABC. Principal component analysis with promax rotation of the Turkish version of the checklist resulted in 5 factors, 12 items loaded on more than one factor were excluded from the checklist. 22 items of the remaining 46 items loaded on the same factors as the original factor derivation, 24 items loaded on the different factors. The results showed that in general, internal consistency of the Turkish version of the ABC appeared to be high and the validity had been established. Also the data was analyzed for effect of age, sex and the placement and the results indicated that age and placement were effective variable on total score and self-injurious, hyperactive, stereotype behaviors, lethargy factor scores and sex was no effective on the any factor and total score. The results were discussed in terms of limitations of the study and utility of the Turkish version of the ABC.
