The Relationships between Anger, Narcissism and Reactive and Proactive Aggression in Adolescence

In recent decades, aggression has been divided into two subtypes as reactive and proactive. The purpose of the study was to examine the social cognitions and emotions that differentiate reactive and proactive aggression. Another pur- pose of the study was to examine whether the adolescents’ reactive and proactive aggression levels was related with anger and narcissism. Two hundred and seventy female and 236 male students filled out Reactive–Proactive Aggres- sion Questionnaire, Narcissistic Personality Questionnaire for Children, and The State-Trait Anger and Anger Ex- pression Scale. Also, to measure typical characteristics of reactive and proactive aggression four different vignettes were utilized. Results indicated that hostile attribution of intent and anger were related with reactive aggression. Perceived self-efficacy for aggression, positive outcome expectations for aggression, and feeling good after enact- ing aggression were associated with proactive aggression. Regression analysis examining the relationships between anger, narcissism and reactive-proactive aggression revealed that trait anger and anger out predicted reactive aggres- sion. It was also found that proactive aggression was positively associated with the exploitativeness dimension of the narcissism and negatively associated with the superiority.
