Lichens and molecular biological applications

The Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is a fairly simple but powerful technique for molecular investigations of lichen phylogeny and population genetics. Lichens are a symbiotic association of a fungus and alga, thus they require special considerations for molecular studies. The present review focuses on nucleic acid extraction from lichens studies on randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) method and the internal transcribed spacer regions of rRNA. In the coming years, molecular biological techniques will be used for more accurate identification of lichen and the newly available molecular methods will significantly contribute to our understanding of lichen phylogeny.
