Pulmonary findings due to chronic pesticide exposure
This study was carried out to demonstrate the pulmonary findings due to chronic pesticide exposure. 40 workers who we-re exposed to pesticides in a seeding factory for 11.8±6.9 years were included in the study and simple Lung Function Tests (LFT), radiological investigations, Non-Spesific Bronchial Provocation Test (NSBPT) with metacholine, serum Acetyl Choli-ne esterase Activity (ACA), along with the clinical findings were studied. 24 workers were actively delivering the pestici-des (Group-1) to the seeds and 16 workers were indirectly exposed to them (Group-2) because they worked in the same environment. All the above mentioned parameters were compared in these two groups. Also, 26 controls having the same demographic properties but were not exposed to any kind of respiratory irritant were compared with these groups clini-cally and spirometrically (Group-3). These groups were also divided into subgroups as smokers and non-smokers. 50% of the workers in the exposed group had at least one respiratory symptom. In 25% of the cases, the respiratory symptoms we-re directly work-related. 70% of the cases had ophtalmologie and dermatologie symptoms. Physical examination revealed at least one pathologic finding in 15%, and at least one pathologic finding on the chest x-ray in 20% of the cases. Their absolute values of FEVl, FVC, FEV/FVC, FEF25-75 parameters were significantly lower than those of the controls (p
