Effects of heat and mass transfer mechanisms in textile materials on clothing thermal comfort

Thermal comfort, which can be defined as 'a pleasant state of physiological, psychological and physical harmony between human body and its environment' is mainly controlled by the sensations of coldness and dampness arising from skin contact with the garment system. These sensations are originated from heat and mass transfer mechanisms occuring between garment system-environment, between clothing layers and within fabric structure. In order to investigate the thermal comfort performances of fabrics and garment systems, besides physiological changes in human body, heat and mass transfer mechanisms ensuring these changes should also be analyzed. The aim of this paper is to examine some of the theoretical and experimental studies about heat and mass transfer mechanisms occuring in fabric and garment systems and determine the direction of these studies.
