Ülkemiz birçok meyve türünün anavatanı olan Akdeniz Bölgesi içerisinde yer almaktadır. Bu nedenle Anadolu topraklarında yüzyıllardır meyvecilik yapılmaktadır. Çumra ilçesinin güneyinde Karaman ili bulunmaktadır. Karaman ili ile çok benzer iklim özelliklerine sahiptir. Çumra ilçesi, Karaman ilinde son yıllarda artan elmacılık faaliyetinden sosyolojik olarak etkilenmişse de, ancak 2000’li yıllarda meyvecilik ivme kazanmaya başlamıştır. Çumra ilçesinde, 2000 yılından önce elma ve meyve ağacı varlığı 60.000 adet civarındadır. Kamu desteği ve çiftçilerin alternatif ürün arayışları neticesinde, son 9 yıl içinde bodur ve yarı bodur klonal elma ağacı sayısı 134.800 adete ulaşmıştır. Çumra ilçesinde klonal anaçlı elma yetiştiriciliğinde başta Karaman olmak üzere bölgenin bilgi birikimi ve tecrübeleri doğru kullanılırsa avantaj sağlanacaktır. Orta Anadolu’da yaşanan ilkbahar geç donlarından en az etkilenen çeşidin son beş yıldır Granny smith olduğu gözlemlenmiştir. Yeni çeşitlerle başlayan elma yetiştiriciliği sektörünün, ihracata dönük çeşit üretimiyle daha da başarılı olacaktır.
