Bu çalışmada Pausanias'm Periegesis tes Hellados (Yunanistan'ın Tasviri) adlı eserinde geçen ikisi ölümlü, diğerleri ise mitos kahramanı niteliğinde yirmi sekiz kült kurucu kadın ele alınmıştır. Yazar tanrılar, kahramanlar, ölümlüler, eski dinsel gelenekler ve şenlikleri etkileyici biçimde günümüze aktarmış: Özellikle ünlü tapınakları, kahraman mezarlarını ve kehanet merkezlerini engin bir bilgelikle işlemiştir. Yunancadan gelen "heroine" kelimesi, genel olarak bulundukları toplumda insanüstü özellikleriyle diğerlerinden ayrılan kadın kahramanları tanımlar. Toplumda eriştikleri büyük bir dinsel saygınlıkla imgelem gücünün, düşüncenin, edebi ve sanatsal yaratıcılığın gelişimine katkıda bulunmuş olan kahramanlar, insanüstü ama asla tanrısal olmayan bir varoluş tarzı göstermişlerdir. Erkek kahramanlara benzer bir biçimde, kült kuran kadın kahramanlar da, yeryüzünde oturan, tanrılar gibi ebediyen orada yaşayan ve güç bakımından da tanrılara yaklaşan ölmüş insanların ruhlarından başka bir şey değildir.

The paper takes into consideration the twenty-eight cult establishing heroines, two of whom are mortal and rest bear the characteristics of mythical beings, in Periegesis tes Hellados (Description of Greece) by Pausanias. The writer effectively reveals the lives and deeds of gods, goddesses, heroes, heroines and mortals. He depicts traditions and customs, rites and rituals. He, furthermore, describes famous temples, tombs of heroines and centres of prophecy with great skill. The word "heroine" is with Greek origin. It is used for a woman with superhuman powers which cause her to seem different fromother women who are the members of the society in which she lives. With the reverence and religious esteem they gain, these heroines make considerable contribution to the imaginative power, way of thinking and the development of literary and artistic life. They are superhuman but not heavenly beings and reveal this attitude of theirs in whatever they perform. Like heroes, cult establishing heroines dwell in this world and they ar, in fact, the souls of people who resemble gods powerwise and who are believed to remain forever where they are born even after they pass away.
