3RD CLASSROOM OF A MEDICINE FACULTY STUDENTS’ INFORMATION AND OPINIONS ABOUT SMOKING
Objective Cigarette smoking is the most important modifiable risk factor in preventing mortality and morbidity worldwide. Medical students who will become a health professional, an educator and a researcher in the following years, have an important role in smoking cessation and control programme in our country and other countries. In our study, it was aimed to investigate the thoughts of students about the causes of smoking, and the harmful effects and their thought of smoking cessation. Material and Methods The study was planned as a descriptive and cross-sectional study in order to determine the students’ knowledge about cigarette smoking, and the factors affecting smoking, in the 2018-2019 academic year. Results The mean age of 227 participants was 20.7 ± 1.2years. Smoking rate is 21%. It was observed that smoking started regularly in high school years and the age of contact with cigarettes was pre-primary period. It was observed that most of the participants did not have enough knowledge about smoking and smoking cessation. Conclusion To increase the knowledge and skills of the medical students about smoking is important for a non-smoking society goal.
