The investigation of the levels of retinoic acid, beta carotene, alfa-tocopherol, ascorbic acid and folic acid in nettle (Urtica urens L.) leaves

In this study, the content of retinoic acid, $beta$-carotene, $alpha$-tocopherol, ascorbic acid and folic acid in the leaves of the nettle (Urtica urens L.) grown in 4 different regions (Elazığ, Malatya, Tunceli ve Bingöl) have been investigated by using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) It was obtained that the level of the retinoic acid, $beta$-carotene, $alpha$-tocopherol, ascorbic acid and folic acid in the fresh nettle leaves were varied between 0.48 ± 0.10 - 0.81 ± 0.22 $mu g.gr^{-1}$; 124-2 ± 17.3 -193.4 ±26.1 $mu g.gr^{-1}$; 1.42 ± 0.26 -1,93 ± 0.39 $mu g.gr^{-1}$; 148.1 ± 17.9 - 253.6 ± 31.7 $mu g.gr^{-1}$ and 3.73 ±0.39 -6.05 ± 0.46 $mu g.gr^{-1}$, respectively. The amount of the retinoic acid, $beta$-carotene,$alpha$-tocopherol, ascorbic acid and folic acid in the nettle leaves were varied for different habitats. In addition, it was determined that the leaves of the investigated plant was found to be rich in folic acid, ascorbic acid and $beta$-carotene but poor in retinoic acid and $alpha$-tocopherol. On the other hand, it was found that the amounts of the ascorbic acid, $beta$-carotene and folic acid in the nettle leaves grown in the sunny habitats were higher than those grown in the shaded habitats.
