Fish behaviour in relation to bottom trawling

It is now well established that a trawl net does not simply act as a mechanical sieve, sampling only the volume of the water through which it is towed. A given fish, reacts according to its size and species specific behaviour to stimuli presented by various components of the gear. Both fishermen and scientist can alter the efficiency and the selectivity of the trawls by altering these stimuli. This paper reviews the evolution of the under-water observation techniques which has been used in improving the understanding of fish behaviour in relation to towed fishing gear operation and describes the usual behavioural patterns of fish in the vicinity of the trawl gear.
