Perceptions of University Students on Oral Health Behaviors

Purpose: We aim to determine the perceptions of first-year students at a foundation university on oral and dental health behaviors. Methodology: The sample of this descriptive study is made up of 477 university students. The data were collected between February and March 2020 using the introductory information form and the Multidimensional Oral Health Control Locus Scale. Descriptive statistics and Kruskal Wallis variance analysis, Mann Whitney U test, adjusted by Bonferroni were used in the evaluation of the data. Findings: While 77.1% of the students had the habit of brushing their teeth, 37.7% had regular dental examinations, decayed, missing, filled teeth score was 3.3±2.8. Oral health behavior scores are high in the intrinsic motivation focus dimension, while the same is close-to-moderate in other sub-dimensions and overall. Such factors as gender, status of regular tooth brushing and dental examination, bad breath problem, presence of decayed, filled or missing teeth affect oral and dental health behaviors in different sub-dimensions and/or total scores. Conclusion: The oral and dental health behaviors of the students are not at the desired level. It is recommended that oral health be given higher priority during the course of university education and that the content enhancing oral health development be included in the school curriculum.
