Heavy Metal Contamination of Table Salt

Table salt is a foodstuff, which is of great importanceto humans. Salt is one of the vital nutrients andshould be consumed on a daily basis for a healthylife. Accumulation of the metals known as toxicheavy metals in living organisms leads to seriousdiseases over time. The salt must be seriously checked for heavy metalcontamination since it is exposed to the heavy metalcontamination in nature due to environmentalpollution. In our research, 18 salt samples were examined, analyses were performed using atomic absorptiondevice. Arsenic content in certain samples andmercury content in another group of samples werefound high. A negative correlation was observedbetween mercury and cadmium contents of thesamples obtained from the sea and the salt lake.
