THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CORE STABILITY AND ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE IN SPRINTERS AND BASKETBALL PLAYERS

The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare the relationship between core stability and athletic performance in 14-16 years old elite male sprinters and basketball players. A total of 16 male sprinters (age 14.18 ± 0.94 years, body height 166.50 ± 8.32 cm), and 19 male basketball players (age 15.37 ± 0.64 years, height 176.71 ± 8.08 cm) participated in this study. Assessment of core stability scores were measured by the Sport Specific Core Muscle Strength and Stability Plank Test. Athletic performance scores were measured by 30 m sprint test, pro agility test, standing long jump test, 60 sec sit-up test, sit and reach test, and right-left handgrip strength test. Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the core stability and athletic performance scores. Spearman’s rho test was utilized to determine relationship between core stability and athletic performance. No significant correlation was found between core stability and athletic performance in sprinters (p>0.05). However, in basketball players a weak level of correlation (r=-0.477, p=0.039) in the negative direction was observed only between core stability and 30 m sprint test. When analyzing both groups together, a weak and moderate level of correlations in the positive direction were observed between core stability and standing long jump test (r=0.463, p=0.005), 60 sec situp test (r=0.360, p=0.034), sit and reach test (r=0.544, p=0.001). According to the study result, no significant difference was found in any of the tests except the 30 m sprint test between sprinters and basketball players.
