Market Model of Religion and Islam in Turkey

While in the other fields of sociology cultural perspective has become more prevalent, there is a reverse trend in the sociology of religion. Cultural outlook of the classical sociology of religion coming from Durkheim and Weber was challenged by a new paradigm based on a market model. This approach is also called Rational Choice Model or supply-side model. This study will elaborate on the ups and downs of this model in explaining religious phenomena in Turkey. This theory also challenged the secularization thesis that modernity will diminish the role of religion in modern societies. This market model of religion attributed the rise of religion to the liberalization of religious market and the lessening state control over religion.
